Wheat Freeze Injury Chart
I have received a few calls today regarding the freeze event last night and its effect on the wheat crop. As most of the wheat in the region has headed, this is one of the most critical times for freeze. Research shows that two hours at 30 F will have a severe impact on yield, floret sterility, spike trapped in boot, etc. At Eastern Virginia AREC, we had three hours of 29.9 - 29.4 F, so I am concerned that there will be some damage. I spoke with a grower whose wheat is heading in the Dinwiddie area who had just one hour at 32 F, so folks in that situation should be ok. Please refer to the attached chart for more info or contact me.
