About Our Gardens

The Hampton Roads AREC features a variety of gardens and demonstration areas that showcase the diversity of plants thriving in our Zone 8A climate. Beyond their beauty, these spaces give visitors an opportunity to see how different species perform under local growing conditions.

The gardens are free to visit and open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Stop by throughout the year to observe how seasonal shifts in temperature and light influence plant growth and appearance.

These gardens are proudly maintained by the Virginia Beach Master Gardeners:

Perennial Theme Gardens Bridge Fundraiser
A red bridge across a pond in a garden

The iconic red arched bridge in the Perennial Theme Gardens has welcomed visitors for more than 30 years. After decades of repairs, it’s time for a full replacement. The new bridge will honor the original design—still red, still beautifully arched—while offering a gentler, ADA‑compliant slope so all visitors can enjoy the gardens with ease. This major improvement will cost approximately $10,000, and your support can make it possible. Your donation to the Hampton Roads AREC Demonstration Garden Foundation directly supports the care, accessibility, and long‑term stewardship of these beloved gardens. Every gift matters and together we make difference.
