In recent years, Virginia Tech has developed an exceptional sporthorse breeding program, internationally recognized for its quality. These outstanding animals, bred for excellence in the hunter, jumper, dressage or eventing disciplines, are used extensively in the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences' teaching, research and outreach missions.
Approximately 30 broodmares, primarily of Hanoverian, Dutch Warmblood and Thoroughbred breeding, call the idyllic pastures of the MARE Center home.
Mares are selected on the basis of temperament, conformation, soundness, gait quality and jumping ability, performance record and foal production history. Many of the mares carry an Elite or Premium title, and more than a few have been highly successful competitors at the national or international level.
Although its breeding program is still fairly young, Virginia Tech has produced many regional and national champions, and is one of the leading breeders with the International Sporthorse Registry/Oldenburg Registry North America, having produced more Premium foals than any US breeder in the history of that organization. Foals produced from Virginia Tech's sporthorse breeding program are available for purchase throughout the year.
