Program Focus
I strive to improve agronomic production systems via the discovery, integration, and implementation of better crop and soil management practices that benefit agriculture and our society at large. My focus is on intensively managed soybean cropping systems, cover crops, and pest management issues. I conduct the official soybean variety test in five regions throughout the Commonwealth and serve as educational adviser for the Virginia Soybean Association and Virginia Soybean Board.
Role of Graduate Students
Graduate students will take an active role in developing and implementing all goals and objectives of their research projects. Students are expected to spend their summers at the Tidewater AREC in Suffolk, Va., where they will conduct the majority of their research. They will provide assistance for additional research conducted by their major professor and others at the Tidewater AREC. Students' research will be presented at regional and/or national meetings and they will be expected to participate in extension programming efforts.

Extension Program
My extension program includes but is not limited to the following:
- Cooperation with VCE agents to improve soybean production practices via seasonal meetings, on-farm research, and field days.
- Work with select county agents to refine research, gather field-scale data, and demonstrate superior soybean production practices throughVirginia On-Farm Soybean Test Plots.
- Development and publication of relevant information for soybean producers via Virginia Cooperative Extension - Publications and Educational Resources website.
- Cooperate with the Virginia Soybean Association and Virginia Grain Producers Association to plan and develop the Virginia Ag Expo, Virginia’s largest agricultural field day.
- Serve as educational advisor to the Virginia Soybean Association and Virginia Soybean Board.
Extension Philosophy
I extend agronomic knowledge and understanding by:
- Observing current practices and listening to concerns
- Improving the meaning and application of and simplifying scientific principles and research
- Guiding the implementation of improved production practices through education and demonstration so as to change behavior that leads to profitable and environmentally responsible agriculture
